High Elms
The family estate of the Lubbock family from 1809 to 1938. In that year it was sold to Kent County Council with the house (by then a 27 bedroom mansion) for many years being used as a nurses' training. In 1965 it was transferred to Bromley Borough Council with the land being given over in perpetuity as a country park. In 1967, the house burnt down, with only some of the outbuildings remaining.
One of the Lubbocks, Sir John, was a close friend of Charles Darwin who lived in Down House in nearby Downe. His son, another Sir John, also influenced by Darwin, planted the estate with specimen trees, some of which, almost 150 years later, can be seen in this photo.
