Middleton Railway - important artefact
Middleton Railway - important artefact
Surprisingly, you are encouraged to bend down and lovingly stroke this 6' length of toothed rail. This is genuine 1812 Blenkinsop rack rail and was part of a set of points on the first commercially successful steam railway in the world. Alongside are genuine stone sleeper blocks. The Middleton Railway has a truly excellent museum with good exhibits that are interpreted well. I was very pleased with the museum but less impressed with the rather chaotic running of the gala day trains.

And yes, I did lovingly stroke the rail!
