The Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) - a nocturnal forager
The hedgehog is common throughout mainland Britain and Ireland, and it can also be found on many islands including Orkney, Shetland, Isle of Man and on some of the Channel Islands. Hedgehogs prefer woodland edges, hedgerows and suburban habitats where they find plenty of food: beetles, worms, caterpillars, slugs and almost anything they can catch. Hedgehogs travel about 1-2 kilometres each night in search of food. They can live for up to 10 years but the average life expectancy is only 2-3 years. In areas with sufficiently low temperatures they hibernate from November until around Easter.
