Claremont Pier
Claremont Pier was built in 1903 and, like many seaside piers, it has had a chequered history. In the early years a paddle steamer service operated from here to Yarmouth but its location close to Great Britain's most easterly point meant that it inevitably had a significant role in the Second World War. In 1940 a hole was blasted in the pier to prevent it becoming a potential invasion landing place and it was later used as an army training area. It was repaired in 1950 but in 1962 parts of it were washed away in a storm. Today there is no public access beyond the building at the shore end which houses a restaurant and other facilities.
