North Western Gardens
The area known as "North Western Gardens" was reconfigured in 2000 to prioritise pedestrian movement as part of a multimillion pound Heritage Lottery Urban Parks funded renewal programme. The park used to be known locally as 'Bog Island' because its underground toilets were marooned in a sea of cars. While traffic is still present on two sides of the triangular space, one side is now anchored to the shops. Thick planting borders of perennials surround the green lawn, wide pavements and dozens of long comfortable benches can now be enjoyed without interference from traffic.

On the right is a hexagonal sculpture SH7882 : Millennium Sculpture by Craig and Mary Matthews LinkExternal link created in 1999 for the Millennium celebrations.

In the background is the rebuilt Tudno Castle Hotel which dated back to the 1870s and was originally two hotels, the Temperance to the south and Tudno Castle to the north. After the pair joined, the establishment became the North Western Hotel but went back to being the Tudno Castle sometime later. It was made a Grade II listed building in 1976 and plans were made to restore the building. After various delays the building eventually became unsafe and had to be demolished. The new building replicates the historical façade.

Short history of the Tudno Castle Hotel

Built in the 1870’s it originally had three storeys above a basement and with attics. It was originally two hotels, the southern section being a Temperance Hotel and Tudno Castle to the north. Eventually they joined and was known at one time as the North Western. Thereafter it changed to the Tudno Castle.
On the east was a former outbuilding, one and a half storey under a slate gabled roof. This was a garage at one time.
A Grade II listed building (CADW source reference 3506), closed in 2008 and awaited redevelopment. Original plans were approved in 2014 which gave permission to redevelop The Tudno Castle Hotel including partial demolition work.
In early 2017 two roads on either side of the Tudno Castle Hotel in Llandudno had to be closed due to the risk of the hotel collapsing. The developers on site, who were preparing for a £10 million redevelopment, noticed "historical movement" in the walls which was much more severe than first thought.
That risk turned into a need to demolish the hotel as soon as possible. Demolition was carried out in late April 2017 and whilst apparently nothing appeared to be happening, fresh plans were drawn up and had to be agreed.
The plan included building a Premier Inn, a Beefeater, and Prezzo. Other restaurants and retail outlets will also appear on the site.
The plan was to replicate the historic facade and considered to be the best proposal to protect the setting and group value of the building within the conservation area.
Reconstruction work commenced in January 2019. However COVID 19 intervened and delayed matters.
The situation as at February 2021 is shown in SH7882 : Tudno Castle Hotel rebuilt 2021
